Dear Friends:
Day One of a brand-new year always feels like a deep breath you didn’t realize you were holding. A clean slate. Fresh pages. New shoes on an old, well-loved path. There’s something beautiful about standing at the edge of a new year, not rushing in, but walking—hand in hand with Jesus—into whatever adventure is ahead.
One thing I learned this past year (and relearned, because I’m stubborn): a busy calendar does not mean a productive life. Checking boxes, hustling through the day, and running on caffeine and good intentions doesn’t automatically mean we’re moving forward. Sometimes it just means we’re tired and really good at multitasking our way into burnout.
Lately, God has been gently reminding me that productivity isn’t about doing more—it’s about being intentional with what actually matters. Slowing down. Paying attention. Asking better questions. Like this one I’m carrying into the new year: What needs to slow down so my process can catch up with my purpose?
I’ve never been afraid of change. Maybe that’s because life trained me early. As a foster kid, change wasn’t optional—it was constant. New homes. New rules. New beginnings before I’d finished unpacking the last one. Turns out, that wasn’t wasted preparation. It trained me for life. Because even good change can shake things loose. You’re standing there, holding pieces you thought were solid, saying, “Okay God… what now?”
And every single time I’ve walked through seasons like that, I’ve been surprised by what was waiting for me on the other side of the hard. Not dramatic. Not flashy. Just good. Stronger. Lighter. Clearer. Most of the time, the change wasn’t as big as my imagination made it—my fear just had a really loud voice.
I’ve learned that being stuck in the unfamiliar doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. Sometimes it just means you’re leaning too hard on your own understanding instead of leaning into God’s. And if the start and end of any year has taught me anything, it’s this: God is not done with the work He started in us.
So, this year, I’m reminding myself to take a deep breath. To sit calmly in the storm of change. To trust that He’s brought me through before—and He’ll do it again. The road ahead won’t be straight (because when has it ever been?), but we’ve been given a map. It’s called the Bible. It doesn’t remove the curves, but it does keep us aligned.
So, here’s my encouragement as we step into this new year: put one foot in front of the other. Take fresh steps with God as your guide. Release the people, tasks, habits, and obligations that no longer serve the season you’re in. Keep what brings life. Let go of what brings noise.
Lesson learned: Slowing down isn’t falling behind—it’s how you make sure you’re headed the right direction.
Scripture for the road ahead:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
Here’s to a year of intentional steps, holy pauses, laughter along the way, and trusting the Guide who’s never once gotten us lost.
With love and expectation,
Your Friend Its Me, Lorie
